Making sense of our world with our Senses

Today we started learning about our Senses. First we brainstormed what our senses were and then we experienced looking at our world through the sense of feeling. We used describing words e.g.  prickly, smooth, soft, dry, hard, rough, rectangular. Then we had the opportunity to try and guess what we had felt.

We had to listen and not tell our partner what we they were feeling.

We described what we were feeling.

Opening of the Playground

Today our long awaited playground was opened. Thanks to the support of our P.T.A and our community our playground had a makeover. There are lots of new activities to enjoy. We are very excited to finally be able to play on it.

Save the Egg Challenge

On Thursday we received a message from the Easter Bunny (EB to us), and he needed help urgently! He needed us to design a device that would protect the Easter Eggs that he would be dropping over the weekend. Last year a lot of Easter Eggs were damaged and broke when they were dropped. Room 7 with the help of Room 4 accepted this challenge and spent the afternoon devising different ways to protect the eggs.

Anytime, anywhere EB you can count on us to help!

Athletics In Room 7 & 8 -

Hot Cross Buns, Hot Cross Buns

Today the Junior Team made hot cross buns. All of the children from Room 2 to Room 8 made hot cross buns. The children showed lots of collaborative learning with their tuakana (older students) helping their teina (younger students).  The children used their key competencies of managing self, relating to others and participating. Ka rawe koutou mo to mahi!

Special thanks to our parents Theresa Penfold and Karen Gilmore for your help. It was a production line with all the children helping to make the dough and then making their own hot cross bun.

Harakeke- Our School Whanau

The harakeke (flax) plant represents the whānau (family) in Māori thought. The rito (shoot) is the child. It is protectively surrounded by the awhi rito (parents). The outside leaves represent the tūpuna (grandparents and ancestors). Room 8 & Room 7 are the ‘Rito’ and the ‘Awhi Rito’ are our parents and teachers. The grass are our school friends. On the harakeke rau (leaf) we shared how we can be kind and on the ‘Korari’ we shared how we can show respect.
